The sun was shining brightly over Washington Park in Michigan City, Ind., as attendees of all ages gathered to enjoy the annual sand sculpting festival. The event, which took place on Friday, July 18, was a vibrant display of creativity, community, and skill. The festival featured master sand sculptors from across the country, including Bruce Peck, who has been a part of the festival since its inception four years ago. For Peck, the festival is not just about competition, but about the meaning behind his art.

“The competition is, for us, just a back piece to reinforce what we are doing,” said Peck. “I come to each competition just trying to do a sculpture that means something to me.”

This year, Peck’s sculpture, a woman rising with new wings, was a powerful statement about perseverance and self-discovery. “It’s to highlight the fact that, if you’re having trouble at any time in your life, don’t be afraid to just take a deeper look in your heart,” said Peck. “You’ll find the real you that’s supposed to be there.”

The festival also features a “Kids Zone” area, where children can watch and learn from the masters. This interactive element encourages kids to unleash their own creativity and explore their imagination.

  1. The festival has three levels for sculptors: amateur, semiprofessional, and master.
  2. Peck, who started as an amateur, moved to semi-pro, and now is a master, emphasized that there is no structure to working one’s way up the ranks.
  3. “There’s no classes you can take, you just need to get your hands in the sand,”

“I’m actually one of the people who started as an amateur, moved to semi-pro, and now I’m up at the master level,”

said Peck. He also emphasized that the key to success lies in consistent practice.

Level Description
Amateur Novice sculptors with little to no experience.
Semiprofessional Experienced sculptors with some recognition in the field.
Master Top-tier sculptors with extensive experience and reputation.

To see Peck’s sculpture and many other professional works, the festival continues this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and admission is $5. The festival is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate their creativity and individuality.

“It’s not just about the art, it’s about the people and the experience,”

said Peck.
