This is a common sentiment among many beachgoers in Hawaii, where the sand is often considered a precious resource. The importance of the sand is not just a matter of aesthetics; it plays a vital role in the ecosystem and the economy. The sand on Kailua Beach, for example, is a vital component of the local ecosystem.

The artist creates sculptures from sand. He works alone and meticulously stacks and packs sand to create his art. Each sculpture takes a significant amount of time to complete, ranging from hours to a full day.

As you would expect, beachgoers stop and watch, ask him questions, and sometimes pose for pictures with his masterpieces. “I think there’s an appeal for all ages, from little kids who are like, ‘Oh, my gosh! Mom and dad, look at that!’ to older people that just appreciate the effort,” he said. Henry estimates he’s made around 200 sand sculptures since he retired from the military and made Hawaii home. Unlike other art forms, his is not meant to last. That makes it extra special. “The stuff I’m doing is there for a temporary period then gets reclaimed by the ocean. It just becomes part of the beach again,” he said. “The next time I come, I dredge it up and make something else.”
