Sand art mural coming to Mount Main Beach for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

She believes that incorporating Māori cultural elements into creative work can lead to more authentic and impactful storytelling. Blanche McMath’s vision for creative agencies in Tauranga Moana is to create a space where Māori artists and creatives can thrive and contribute to the region’s cultural identity. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing between Māori and non-Māori creatives.

McMath said both artists were eager to contribute to promoting the resurgence of te reo Māori in a town where, last year, te reo Māori signage on local rubbish bins was “shamefully” painted over. Sand artist Kenrick Smith said te reo Māori was alive and growing in New Zealand and the Bay of Plenty, the place he called home. “I’m proud to be a part of this project, creating this piece of sand art is an honour, and I hope it can encourage and inspire anyone at any age to learn and use more te reo Māori at home and at work.”

This is a call to action for the community. It is a reminder that the language needs to be spoken and used regularly to stay alive. The use of te reo Māori in daily life is essential for its survival. This is not just about celebrating the week but about ensuring that te reo Māori continues to thrive in the Māori community.

McGrath said the event would be a celebration of the reo Māori, the Māori language, and the importance of its revitalization. He explained that the sand art creation would be a powerful visual representation of the language’s beauty and complexity. The event would feature a range of activities, including workshops, performances, and discussions, all aimed at promoting the reo Māori and its cultural significance.
